Every week — and sometimes two and three times a week — I am reminded of what an amazing experience Open Door Sports has been for our daughter, Lucy.
Lucy was born with a rare genetic syndrome that causes a range of developmental delays.Since she was a baby, it was clear that she would not be able to participate in most athletic programs. This was tough for her, since both of her brothers played multiple sports, and she knew very well how important those sports were to them.
When she started with Open Door Sports, it was clear right away how important it would be to her.To be able to compete with kids on her own level gave her a sense of purpose and a feeling that she was strong and competent … just like her brothers. The peer mentors who participated in her programs struck just the right balance, encouraging and supporting her, while still pushing her to improve. But the best part of the experience has been the connections she made with all of the kids in her programs: high fives, fist bumps, hugs, pats on the back, and wild cheers for every goal and great defensive play. The people she met and spent time with became her friends, and she always looked forward to each session.
Even though we know how incredibly lucky we are to have ODS in Lucy’s life, it is hard to imagine life without it.Sarah and all of the kids who support her do nothing but give, and their love for the program is an inspiration to all of us.It makes clear to Lucy that she can do anything that her brothers can do if she sets her mind to it.It is truly a spectacular program.
