Our son Jay, who is ten years old with Down syndrome, loves nothing more than to throw or kick a ball. Athletics have always come naturally to him and are one of his strengths. At the younger ages he was able to participate in sports organized for his typical peers. But it eventually became frustrating for him when play became competitive requiring more strategy, skill, and stamina. We feel so fortunate to have discovered Open Door Sports where Jay can thrive. Coach Sarah creates an environment that is at the same time nurturing, physical, instructional and fun!
Jay participates in ODS basketball and soccer. Practices are the highlight of his week. ODS provides him with an opportunity to meaningfully participate in sports with other kids of his ability and to also hang out, sharing experiences with his typical peers. It is not just playtime at ODS. Coach Sarah teaches sports fundamentals and considers the players athletes, seeing potential in every one of them. Each athlete has an opportunity every week to showcase his or her talents. It is a happy, supportive environment where everyone is cheered and we are grateful!
