Greg Wells completed a Charity Bike Ride from his Royal Bank of Canada office in Washington DC to RBC headquarters in Montreal, Quebec, raising nearly $70,000 to benefit Open Door Sports and their work on behalf of children with disabilities. Greg, nicknamed Diesel, biked 740 miles from August 10th through the 17th, averaging over 90 miles each day. His route involved stops in New Freedom, PA; Conshohocken, PA; Shroudsburg, PA; Poughkeepsie, NY; Mechanicville, NY; Port Henry, NY; Plattsburgh, NY and, finally, Montreal, Quebec. He was supported by Amedeo Rosenfield and Jack Lasota, both sophomores at the University of Maryland, College Park. Amedeo is a former peer buddy and assistant coach for ODS.
Specifically, the ride involved:
- 740 miles biked
- 33,600 feet climbed
- Downpours
- Swarms of bees
- Daily ice baths
- And more than a few mechanical challenges
Greg’s battled through all of these challenges so kids with special needs, like his daughter, Emory, could have a chance to be on a team, meet new friends and have pride in their abilities. He fought through fatigue so teens like his daughter, Marlie, could be part of the solution – developing understanding, respecting difference and finding out that we are all more alike than we are different.
